How to get quality eLearning

With the way we work changing so drastically over the last 12 months, more and more businesses are looking to develop, upskill and even onboard their staff in ways which reduces the need for face-to-face time. eLearning is the perfect solution for when you want ‘just in time’ or flexible delivery learning options. But how can you make sure you get the outcomes you need from your eLearning? Whether you get someone to help you develop inhouse or you outsource, there are a few key things which can make a massive difference.

1. Start out strong

Starting with a storyboard which is aligned to your training needs analysis is essential. A storyboard provides a detailed description of the content and development instructions in an editable document so changes can be tracked. This ‘script’ of the text, voiceover, images and interactions which will appear on each slide, allows you to ensure your eLearning will meet its objectives before you waste time in development. If you are outsourcing your eLearning development it allows you get on the same page as your developer, visualise the end outcome and manage expectations of stakeholders. Little things in eLearning can distract the learner from your message and changes can be expensive to fix. Get your stakeholders involved at this stage and be pedantic now, so it doesn’t cost you later.

Some of the things to check at storyboard stage are:

  • The eLearning module is named in way which makes sense and is easily distinguishable from other eLearning.
  • Key words are used correctly and consistently and they are defined in a glossary if necessary.
  • Learning objectives are aligned to the training needs, are clearly articulated in the eLearning and are met by the content and, where possible, activities.

See our eLearning Review Checklists document for a comprehensive list.

2. Development review

It is obvious that the eLearning itself needs to be carefully reviewed and tested. Here are a few things which can be easy to miss if you don’t take a systematic approach to this task:

  • The developed module matches the storyboard exactly, with nothing missing.
  • Images are aligned to the content and don’t contain anything which may be misconstrued …
getting a Work Health Safety or compliance representative to review can help pick up subtleties you may miss.
  • All videos, animations, interactions, activities, links and resources work as they should.
  • Navigation works both forwards (next) and backwards (going to a previous screen)
  • Style guide and colours have been applied correctly.
  • Quizzes reinforce the learning and work when answered both correctly and incorrectly.

3. Testing the finished product

Just because you thoroughly reviewed the eLearning at the development stage does NOT mean you can relax just yet. The published version of your course needs to be tested in the environment from which people will access it. If possible involve a small tester group of end users, so you don’t miss things which are not obvious if you have a higher level access. Ask your testers to check:

  • The course launches correctly.
  • The instructions for navigating and completing the eLearning make sense.
  • Navigation works and makes sense to them.
  • The course responds as expected when they fail to complete the course.
  • Assessments / quizzes / knowledge checks respond as expected when completed correctly and incorrectly in the published course.
  • The course saves progress if exited partway through.
  • The course completes when all requirements are met.
  • Revisiting the course later, if allowed, gives the expected result, i.e. it either resets so it can be completed again or retains its completed status.
